Challenges

Where it stood

A small shop in a crowded German pet-food market, with paid search doing most of the work and organic search barely contributing.

Little organic traffic

About 300 organic visits a month when we started: the shop was hard to find for the food and sample searches people actually make.

Google filters at the start

In the first stage of SEO work the site hit Google's spam and quality filters, which held rankings down until they were cleared.

No view of what sells

Orders, products and ad cost sat in separate tools, with no e-commerce tracking to tie a sale to the channel that brought it.

Expensive paid search

Google Ads competed with large pet-food brands and shops on the same German search terms.

Solutions

What we did

GA4 e-commerce tracking

A tracking spec for the developers covering the whole purchase path, from product view and cart to shipping and payment, with a user ID on login. Set up through Google Tag Manager.

A data pipeline in BigQuery

The GA4 export, Google Ads data and other ad and placement costs brought together in BigQuery and cleaned into reporting tables.

Reporting boards

Looker Studio boards on top of BigQuery showing traffic, orders and cost by channel in one place.

Google Ads rebuilt on research

Competitor ads and keywords analysed; campaigns and German ad copy rebuilt around the products and offers that sell, including free samples.

SEO, through the filters first

We worked the site out of Google's filters in the first stage, then built technical fixes and content for the category, product and sample searches people make.
